What is patio and pool deck resurfacing?

Resurfacing means repairing an existing concrete patio or pool deck and covering it with a new, outdoor-rated surface, instead of breaking it out and pouring again. The old concrete is cleaned and mechanically prepared, cracks and spalled areas are repaired, and a textured, UV-stable finish is applied and sealed. The result looks new, grips when wet, runs cooler in the sun and keeps water and de-icing salt out of the slab.

JDS Concrete Coatings resurfaces patios, pool decks, walkways and steps across Northeast Ohio, including Canton, Massillon, North Canton, Jackson Township, Green and Akron. Most projects take 1–2 days of work, scheduled around a dry forecast, and carry a written 4–5 year warranty.

Drag through the year

Twelve Months on a Northeast Ohio Pool Deck

Outdoor concrete here never gets a quiet season. Move the slider to see what each part of the year does to it, and when the coating season runs.

Winter

December to February

Water that soaked into bare concrete freezes, expands and thaws, over and over. Add de-icing salt and the surface starts to scale and flake. It is the damage we get called about every April. A sealed surface keeps the water out in the first place.

Spring

March to May

Thaw and rain show you what winter did: spalled patches, wider cracks, a rough gray surface that holds puddles. This is the best time to get on the schedule, because the good-weather dates go first.

Summer

June to August

Sun beats on the deck all day. Dark or bare concrete gets hot underfoot, pool water and sunscreen leave it slick, and UV slowly chalks ordinary sealers. Light-colored, textured, UV-stable finishes are made for exactly this.

Fall

September to November

Leaves and acorns leave brown tannin stains on unsealed concrete, and the first frosts arrive before most people have sealed anything. Early fall is the last good window to coat before winter.

Why outside is different

A Pool Deck Is Not a Garage Floor

The coating that is perfect in a garage can fail outdoors in a couple of summers. Outside, a surface has five things working against it at once.

Direct sun

Constant UV yellows and chalks indoor epoxy. Outdoor work calls for UV-stable materials that hold their color.

Heat underfoot

Bare feet find out fast. Lighter colors and textured finishes reflect more sun and stay noticeably cooler than dark or bare concrete.

Water and bare feet

A pool deck is wet by design. The finish needs built-in texture so it grips when wet, without being rough on skin.

Freeze-thaw and salt

An outdoor slab is wet, then frozen, dozens of times a winter. The surface has to seal water out and still let the slab breathe.

Pool chemicals

Chlorine, salt systems, sunscreen and acid washes all land on the deck. The sealer has to shrug them off.

That is why JDS does not simply carry its indoor floor system outside. Patios and pool decks get an outdoor-rated process chosen for sun, water and freeze-thaw. For the indoor systems, see garage floor coatings, epoxy flake floors and quartz floors.

Finish Options for Patios and Pool Decks

Outdoor concrete can be finished a few different ways. Which one suits you depends on how the space is used, how much sun it gets, and the look of the house. We go through them with you at the quote.

Textured overlayThe classic pool deck finish

A thin cement-based layer sprayed or troweled over the repaired slab and knocked down into a low, random texture. It hides old repairs, grips well when wet, and in a light color it is the coolest option underfoot.

Stain and sealFor concrete that is still in good shape

Color is worked into sound concrete and locked under a clear outdoor sealer, often with a fine grip additive. It keeps the natural look of the concrete with warm, varied tones. Best on patios and porches without much surface damage to hide.

How We Resurface a Patio or Pool Deck

Outdoor work runs on the forecast. We watch the weather so the surface goes down dry and cures properly.

  1. Worn concrete patio with cracks and scaling being assessed before resurfacing

    Look and measure

We check the slab for cracks, scaling, drainage and movement, measure it, and tell you honestly whether it should be resurfaced or replaced.

  2. Pressure washing an algae-stained concrete pool deck, with a clear line between cleaned and dirty concrete

    Clean and profile

The surface is pressure-washed and mechanically prepared so the new finish bonds to sound concrete, not to dirt, algae or old sealer.

  3. Gloved hand troweling repair mortar into a crack and spalled patch on an outdoor concrete slab

    Repair the slab

Cracks, spalls and pitted areas are rebuilt. Control and expansion joints are kept working, not buried, so the slab can still move.

  4. Installer flattening a sprayed cement texture coat into a knockdown pattern beside a pool, with a hopper gun behind

    Apply the finish

The texture and color you chose go down across the whole surface, worked carefully around coping, drains, steps and the house.

  5. Clear sealer being rolled onto a textured tan pool deck, slightly deeper in color where sealed

    Seal and hand over

A UV-stable outdoor sealer locks it in. We tell you exactly when you can walk on it, put furniture back and open the pool.

Looking after it

Keeping It Good Through Ohio Winters

An outdoor finish works harder than any indoor floor. A little care keeps it looking right for years.

Rinse it off
A hose and a soft brush handle most of it. Rinse pool chemicals, fertilizer and leaf piles off before they sit.
Go easy with de-icer
Use sand or a concrete-safe de-icer instead of rock salt, and a plastic shovel instead of a metal edge.
Pads under furniture
Lift rather than drag heavy planters, grills and metal chair legs, and put pads under anything that lives in one spot.
Plan to reseal
Every outdoor sealer wears in sun and weather. A fresh coat every few years is normal upkeep, and far cheaper than starting over.

Pool deck and patio resurfacing near you

From Backyard Pools to Lakeside Patios

JDS Concrete Coatings is based in Canal Fulton, between Massillon and Akron. We resurface backyard pool decks in Jackson Township, North Canton, Green and Hartville, patios behind older homes in Canton and Massillon, and the lakeside patios and walkways around the Portage Lakes and Lake Cable, where concrete sits close to water all year.

Every one of those slabs lives through the same Northeast Ohio cycle of snow, salt, thaw and summer sun. We build the repair and the finish around that, not around a brochure written for Arizona.

Patio and Pool Deck Questions

The best pool deck coating for Ohio is an outdoor-rated, UV-stable finish with built-in texture, in a light color, applied over properly repaired and prepared concrete. It needs to grip when wet, stay comfortable under bare feet, stand up to pool chemicals, and survive freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salt. Indoor garage epoxy is the wrong product for the job, because it yellows and chalks in direct sun.

In most cases, yes. Surface temperature depends mainly on color and texture. Light colors reflect more sunlight, and a textured surface puts less hot material in contact with your skin. A light, textured finish runs noticeably cooler than dark, smooth or bare gray concrete. No surface in full July sun stays cold, so we will steer you toward the cooler colors if that matters to you.

It should not be, and that is the point of resurfacing one. Pool deck finishes are built with texture or a grip additive so they hold footing when wet, while staying comfortable on bare feet. A smooth, glossy sealer with no texture is what makes a deck slick, and it is one of the most common problems we are asked to fix.

Usually, yes. Surface cracks, scaling, pitting and spalled patches are repaired before the new finish goes on, and a textured finish hides those repairs well. What resurfacing cannot fix is a slab that is heaving, sinking or still moving. Cracks from that kind of movement tend to come back, so we will tell you at the quote if replacement is the better call.

Late spring through early fall, roughly May to September, with April and October possible when the weather cooperates. Outdoor finishes need a dry surface and mild temperatures to bond and cure. Spring dates fill first, so the best time to get a quote is late winter, before you want to open the pool.

Most patios and pool decks take 1–2 days of work. After that there is a short cure period before foot traffic, a little longer before furniture goes back, and cure time depends on temperature and humidity. We give you exact walk-on, furniture and swimming times for your project at handover.

A sealed surface handles winter far better than bare concrete, because salt water cannot soak in and freeze. Rock salt is still hard on any outdoor surface over time, so we recommend sand or a concrete-safe de-icer, a plastic shovel, and keeping the sealer maintained.

It depends on the square footage, how much crack and surface repair the slab needs, the finish you choose, and details like steps, coping and drains. Resurfacing generally costs much less than tearing out and re-pouring. JDS measures and inspects the concrete in person and gives you a fixed quote. On-site quotes are free and there is no obligation.

A properly prepared and resurfaced patio or pool deck is built to last for years, and JDS backs the work with a written 4–5 year warranty. Outdoor surfaces do wear faster than indoor floors, so expect to reseal every few years. That upkeep is what keeps the finish protected through Ohio winters.
